Someone had to get the permits to close that road down and someone else had to go rent all of those cars find the professional drivers brief them corral them, get walkie talkies to communicate. Everything would have been mapped out for this. There are probably even CGI renderings of how the chase should look from every angle with speeds, acceleration. I have a friend who is a stunt driver in the GCC and for stuff like this every single car has been placed deliberately with a professional driver, every meter of road has been measured and re-measured, every turn every weave and swerve has been planned and choreographed and rehearsed. Wouldn't be surprised if it was just once. Something like Bourne in Ultimatum taking that car backwards off the parking deck was shot statically and maybe done two or three times. So it's easier to imply movement with the camera. Mostly because you have to do it over and over again. It also costs more to do a wider take, such as in the Marvel films where their fighting is literally otherworldly, so it takes more to sell it in broader strokes both in fighting and camera capture.īut as for car chases, it's rare when something really, really, risky is being done. It's actually a lot easier for the actors to do more realistic fight techniques, and then use handheld camera techniques to imply even more overt movement. Asian martial arts films are an exception to this, but Greengrass and the Bourne films are a good example of ushering in the quick cut, realistic fighting that basically everyone does now. The camera is the tool to imply the movement, especially in fight choreography. That's how it's always done, for any type of movement, really.
